Choosing a celebrant
Congratulations. You are about to engage in the most exciting journey of your lives and you have already given some thought about whom you would like to conduct the ceremony. Choosing a humanist ceremony is a positive choice. It puts you and your love for each other centre stage. It puts human dignity before any supernatural entity. It is a celebration of enlightenment values - of respect, inclusion, diversity, human rights, the wonder of science, the joy of creativity and the beauty of nature. All celebrants trained and accredited by Humanists UK will provide excellent service, so the choice is yours. Take your time to find the celebrant that is right for you.
Designing the ceremony
If you choose me, then I will work with you over the months ahead to design the ceremony that best fits your needs, dreams, aspirations and hopes. We can make it the best possible experience, something you both will remember forever, as well as your families and friends. I can share a range of ideas on readings, vows, ceremonial acts, performances and design. You probably have a good idea about the music you would like, but if not I can help with this too. I have organised ceremonies and events all over the world, I have written about many cultures and communicated widely through the media: so I can really offer you some great ideas. Whatever you decide, it will be what is right for you.
Rehearsal
I always encourage the couples I work with to have a rehearsal, ideally at the venue the day before the event. I understand that this is not always possible, so I have done rehearsals on the phone or by Skype, but whatever can be arranged, you will not regret it. It allows you both, as well as your key performers (best man, best woman, bridesmaids etc.) to feel relaxed on the day. I will produce a working script for all those involved: the venue, musicians, readers and so on.
Your Big Day
I will work behind the scenes on the day itself to ensure the ceremony is a success. I am good at thinking on my feet, so if the babies in the audience decide to raise the rafters, or your uncle has refused to switch off his mobile phone, I will be ready so that you can both relax and share a smile. When the ceremony ends and you move on to your reception, I will leave you both a presentation copy of your wedding script to keep forever.
Greening your Wedding
Many couples wish to celebrate the environment and the beauty of the natural world on the special day. We can integrate this into the design of your wedding - the choice of music, readings, symbols and the ceremony itself. You might also be looking at keeping your carbon footprint low, minimising food waste or avoiding plastics. Having worked in sustainability all my life I can align my own role to meet what matters to you most.
